The spring of 2018 may well be remembered as the beginning of a mass movement by working people against the domination of corporations and the 1%.

The leadership in red states and the federal government have tilted the tax system to favor the very wealthy, while demanding sacrifices from the powerless majority.

The teachers in West Virginia were first to say “Enough!”

But they are far from last.

The ALEC-inspired Republican legislatures killed collective bargaining, and the Supreme Court in expected to hobble labor unions with the Janus decision.

But that’s not going to stop working people from organizing and demanding a fair share of the bounty that they produced.

For all of Facebook’s sins and transgressions, it has nonetheless created a way for voiceless people to organize and act. Teachers and others created collectives on Facebook and used them to mobilize for mass actions.

A trusted school leader exemplifies Connection when he or she “fosters shared beliefs and a sense of community and cooperation.”[1] Shaping the schools’ culture and fostering community is a challenging responsibility for school leaders. They need to be careful not to abandon or abdicate their role, while at the same time empowering those they manage with shaping, building, and manifesting the school’s sense of community. We are relational beings and we function best when we operate in dependence of each other. An effective model of school leadership is one of empowering others to the greatest extent possible, without abdicating or withholding involvement and responsibility. Here are six components to support that work, and their effectiveness is built on a single and shared factor. Each component must be INTENTIONAL.

Something important seems to be bubbling across the country among public school teachers.

In recent weeks groundswells of educators have been effectively organizing in West Virginia, Oklahoma, Arizona and Kentucky to protest the lack of sufficient financial resources being allocated to their students, the insultingly low compensation they receive for the indispensable work they do, and the relentless slashing of their benefits.

While teachers unions have played key roles in these various work actions, it has been the rank -and-file teachers that have driven these movements.

Why don’t more low-income and minority students succeed in school? There is plenty of talk about bad schools, insufficient resources, turbulent neighborhoods, and the like. And, yes, lots of disadvantaged students start school behind their more advantaged peers — and, because of these myriad challenges, stay behind. But there are many others who demonstrate success in school, at least for stretches of their educational careers, but fall off along the way. Instead of resigning ourselves to these outcomes, we must instead ask: Why, specifically, does this happen? And how do we fix it?

Raising a mentally strong kid doesn’t mean he won’t cry when he’s sad or that he won’t fail sometimes. Mental strength won’t make your child immune to hardship – but it also won’t cause him to suppress his emotions.

In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Mental strength is what helps kids bounce back from setbacks. It gives them the strength to keep going, even when they’re plagued with self-doubt. A strong mental muscle is the key to helping kids reach their greatest potential in life.
